How it started

Updot started when Thomas Ashton had to recover his strength after an incident that left him needing a wheelchair. He wanted to gradually return to everyday activities, but most existing devices focus on step counting or movement. This means that they do not count many common activities where you stand still. He created Updot to change that.

Why track time on feet

Recovery and chronic conditions

After an injury or illness, you may need to rebuild time on your feet gradually. With a chronic condition, you may need to watch it carefully. Either way, Updot tracks that time, so that you can see how much you have done, and decide for yourself when to rest and when to do more.

Sitting less

It can be easy to sit more than you mean to at home or work. Updot shows how long you have really been on your feet, and lets you set your own plan to keep yourself on track.

Is Updot a standing time tracker?

Yes. Updot tracks your total time on feet, including both standing still and walking.

Why not just use step count?

Step count can be useful, but it doesn’t capture everything. Activities like cooking, standing at a desk, or standing to chat with a friend may involve little or no steps, but still take time and effort. Updot is designed to make that visible.

Doesn't Apple Watch track stand hours?

The Apple Watch awards a "stand hour" when you stand and move for at least one minute during an hour. This means you could stand still at your desk or in the kitchen for 30 minutes and receive no credit, while a one-minute walk to the bathroom could earn a full stand hour. Updot tracks how long you are on your feet: 30 minutes standing still counts as 30 minutes, and 1 minute of walking counts as 1 minute.

Which clothes does Updot work with?

Updot works well with most clothing worn on your legs, such as trousers, leggings, shorts and many skirts or dresses. Its magnetic clip attaches securely without causing damage. It may be less accurate with very loose clothing.

Is Updot a medical device?

No. Updot is a wellness product for general activity awareness. The device and app provide information about the time you spend on your feet, which may help you notice patterns and make your own decisions about day-to-day activity. What you do with this information is up to you.

Updot is not intended to be used for medical purposes, and is not a substitute for advice from a qualified healthcare professional based on your personal circumstances.

When will Updot be available?

Updot will be generally available later in 2026. There will be some opportunities to test it before release. To be kept informed, register your interest.
